I love the Gospel of Matthew because it gives us constant glimpses into who Jesus is instead of just his actions. Look at Matthew 12:15-21.
Jesus withdrew from that place. Many followed him, and he healed all their sick, warning them not to tell who he was. This was to fulfill what was spoken through the prophet Isaiah:
Here is my servant whom I have chosen,
the one I love, in whom I delight;
I will put my Spirit on him,
and he will proclaim justice to the nations.
He will not quarrel or cry out;
no one will hear his voice in the streets.
A bruised reed he will not break,
and a smoldering wick he will not snuff out,
till he leads justice to victory.
In his name the nations will put their hope.
Jesus is not pretentious. He does not come in majesty humbled himself. He does not come screaming from the public square. (Those times are coming). He is God and shares truth with the masses. He has compassion on the broken and humbles the proud.
In our "add-on Jesus" culture where we throw his name in to whatever we are doing, do we stop long enough to see the real Jesus? Do we still take pride in our own actions? Why? We have nothing to boast about but Christ.
Our attitude should reflect Christ's (Philippians 2). I constantly see and struggle with my own desires to glorify myself. "Hey everyone, look at me! I'm so spiritual..." The real question is "Am I walking humbly with my God?" If so, then my life will look a lot more like Jesus.
Peace,
